Last Hedgerow

Last Hedgerow

New development encroaches on what were my ancestors' cultivated fields. These trees are probably not 300-400 years old, but somewhere between 1638 and 2020. It's always hard to appreciate inevitable change. This is my favorite morning walk where nearly everyday I look across the Sakonnet to Tiverton where my studio is. The land goes on in spite of changes. When I first came here to live 22 years ago, I climbed over stone stiles to get into the neighboring field where I bushwhacked exploring where more hedgerows separated the plowed acreage. That field soon became a through street with 16 houses and still building. Soon this view of the Sakonnet will be punctuated with rooftops.
